Jelly, from Carolina Tiger Rescue in Pittsboro, NC, was the first tiger ever "saved" at this habitat for tigers and many other large cat species. He was spectacular in person, and passed away recently after living more than 20 years in captivity. Be sure to schedule a tour to visit his pals if you are planning to be in/near the Raleigh/Sanford area of NC off I-40. This is not a drop in zoo, they offer guided tours weekly, including sunset tours at certain times of the year.
Creating art at any age takes guts! For me, the artistic process is therapeutic, and it is universal. I believe art is an under-rated gift we all have. Shut down early for most of us, because of all the pressure the world puts on us to do other things. My mind is always spinning with ideas, and I work on more than one piece at a time. I draw directly on the canvas first. Quick, gestural sketches reveal the initial spirit of the image, subject to change over time. Next, I color in and outside the lines, mixing paint on the surface as I go. Finally I use paint or oil pastel to outline and refine the image. Sometimes, I collage. There are lots of layers in life.
